Foritified farm

Foritified farm

This historic photograph shows a fortified rural structure in Għasri, standing prominently within an open agricultural landscape defined by terraced fields and long stretches of dry‑stone rubble walls. In the foreground, carefully built stone boundaries divide cultivated land, while a tall tree and a simple roadside verge frame the left side of the scene. Such fortified farms or tower houses were historically used in Gozo as both agricultural residences and places of refuge, particularly in periods when the countryside was vulnerable to raids. The tower element provided a vantage point for surveillance and a secure retreat, while the surrounding buildings supported farming activity and storage.
