Citadel view

This historic photograph shows a striking view of the Citadel of Victoria, dominated by massive limestone bastions rising sharply from the surrounding ground. The foreground reveals part of the fortified approach, with stone paving and sections of thick walls leading the eye toward a prominent bastion crowned by a small guard structure. The Citadel has served as Gozo’s principal fortified settlement since antiquity, occupying the island’s highest central point for defensive and administrative purposes. Its imposing bastions and curtain walls were largely reshaped during the time of the Order of St John to protect the population from maritime raids.
