Fort Chambray

This historic photograph shows part of the massive fortifications of Fort Chambray, overlooking open countryside and the distant coastline. In the foreground, a deep ditch or dry moat cuts through the terrain, bordered by thick limestone walls and sloping bastions that rise steeply above it. Fort Chambray was constructed in the mid‑18th century by the Order of St John as a fortified settlement intended to rival Valletta, strategically positioned above Mġarr Harbour. Its design follows advanced military engineering principles of the time, incorporating bastions, ditches, and strong curtain walls to withstand artillery and control the surrounding approaches.
