Fortified farm

Categories & Tags: Beaches
This historic photograph shows a large fortified farmhouse constructed from thick limestone walls, with a prominent square tower rising above the rest of the structure. The tower features small rectangular openings and projecting stone corbels near the roofline, suggesting defensive or lookout functions, while the lower walls form an enclosed compound with a single arched entrance. Such fortified farms or tower houses were characteristic of the Gozitan countryside, particularly in areas exposed to isolation and vulnerability before modern security. The elevated tower provided both surveillance and protection, allowing inhabitants to monitor surrounding land and retreat in times of danger, while the enclosed yard supported farming activity, storage, and livestock management.
