Santa Cecilia Tower

This historic photograph shows Santa Cecilja Tower, a tall, rectangular fortified structure built from finely cut limestone blocks, rising prominently against a clear sky. The tower’s walls are largely plain and solid, with only a few small, high‑placed rectangular openings, emphasising its defensive nature. Santa Cecilja Tower is one of Gozo’s historic fortified rural towers, designed to serve both as a residence and a place of refuge in times when the countryside was exposed and vulnerable. Such towers provided elevated vantage points for surveillance and protection, allowing inhabitants to control access and monitor the surrounding land.
