Ta' Sopu Watchtower by the coast

Rising between San Blas Bay and Daħlet Qorrot, Ta’ Isopu Tower, also known locally as San Blas Tower, was built in 1667 by Gozo’s Università during the rule of Grand Master Nicolas Cotoner. It holds the distinction of being the last coastal watchtower constructed by the Knights of St John in Gozo.
Designed with defence in mind, the tower features thick, sloping walls and an elevated entrance. In 1798, its guns were fired at the approaching French fleet, making it the only known watchtower in Gozo to have taken such action.
After many years of neglect, the tower was restored between 2003 and 2006. Today it stands once again as a prominent landmark, with its access stairs and drawbridge reconstructed. The tower is open to visitors on selected days throughout the year.
