Annunciation Gate

An early 1900s photograph by Michele Farrugia shows the Annunciation Gate, a historic entrance leading into the fertile valley known locally as Il‑Lunzjata. Beyond the gate lies a landscape long valued for its rich soil and steady water supply. During the time of the Knights of St John, the area was used for hunting, while today it remains one of Gozo’s most important agricultural valleys.
Visiting Il‑Lunzjata at this time of year, one is often accompanied by the constant soothing sound of running water from the natural springs that still line the valley. At the entrance stands the chapel dedicated to the Annunciation of Our Lady.
