Captured at Dwejra Bay in Gozo, these stills from the 1953 film Single-Handed (released in the United States as Sailor of the King) shows HMS Manxman disguised as the German raider Essen.
For the production, the Royal Navy vessel was carefully modified with mock gun turrets and enlarged funnels, while painted damage along her bow created the impression of a battle-worn cruiser seeking refuge. The dramatic setting of Dwejra, with its towering cliffs and the presence of Fungus Rock, was used to represent the remote “Resolution Island” where the ship hides for repairs.
The movie is based on the 1929 novel Brown on Resolution by C. S. Forester.
