Capuchin's Church

This historic photograph shows the façade of the Capuchin Church in Victoria, built in solid Maltese limestone and characterised by a restrained yet dignified Baroque design. The church front is organised symmetrically, with three arched openings at ground level forming a sheltered portico, above which rise strong pilasters supporting the upper structure. The Capuchin Church forms part of the Capuchin Friars’ complex in Victoria and reflects the simplicity associated with the Franciscan Capuchin order, which favoured functional yet spiritually expressive architecture. Built during the period when religious orders played an important role in Gozo’s social and spiritual life, the church served both the friars and the surrounding community.
