St. George Basilica

St. George Basilica

This historic photograph shows the richly ornamented façade of St George’s Basilica rising at the end of a narrow street in Victoria. Built in finely dressed limestone, the church façade is dominated by a grand central doorway framed with deep Baroque carving, sculpted scrolls, and an oval niche above the entrance. St George’s Basilica is one of the most important religious landmarks in Gozo and is dedicated to Saint George, patron saint of the parish. The church dates back to medieval origins, but the present Baroque structure was largely completed in the 18th century, reflecting strong Italian artistic influence. Renowned for both its exterior and its lavish interior, the church was elevated to the status of a minor basilica in 1958, confirming its central role in the spiritual, cultural, and architectural life of Victoria.
