Farmers in Xewkija

Categories & Tags: People
In this historic photograph, we see two men standing beside a dry‑stone wall, exchanging a few words. Their clothing reflects the working style of farmers in earlier times: wide cotton trousers, a light collarless shirt, a waistcoat, the traditional work belt, a cap or beritta — all practical garments typical of daily rural life. One of the men sports the thick moustache that was very common in that era.
On the right side of the image, a carved cross appears on the wall, likely placed as a memorial or a religious symbol, often found along rural paths or at crossroads. To the left, we notice a prickly‑pear plant, which was extremely common in the Maltese countryside and often grew along stone walls.
