Xlendi, circa 1890. At the centre of this rare photograph stands the statue of Saint Andrew — Sant Indrija — patron saint of fishermen. Carved in local limestone, the statue was blessed on 18 June 1882 by Bishop Giovanni Maria Camilleri, who later granted forty days of indulgence to those who prayed before it.
Positioned where fishing boats are kept for the winter, this votive statue has quietly watched over the bay for generations. To this day, it is honoured every 30 November with flowers and lights — a tradition that continues the quiet devotion that began nearly a century and a half ago.
