Ggantija Temples

Categories & Tags: Archaeological Sites
This historic photograph shows a narrow stone passage within the Ġgantija Temples, formed by massive upright megaliths lining both sides of a stepped entrance. The large limestone blocks are irregular in shape, heavily weathered, and pitted with natural erosion, while a low rubble wall closes off the space at the far end. The Ġgantija Temples are among the oldest free‑standing stone structures in the world, dating back to around 3600–3200 BC, long before the pyramids of Egypt. Built by a prehistoric society using enormous limestone blocks, the temples are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and reflect advanced planning and construction techniques for their time.
