Ggantija Temples

Categories & Tags: Archaeological Sites
This historic photograph shows an exterior section of the Ġgantija Temples, where massive, irregular limestone blocks are stacked to form thick enclosing walls. The stones vary greatly in size and shape, some appearing deeply eroded and pitted, giving the structure a rough and ancient texture. The Ġgantija Temples date back to around 3600–3200 BC, making them among the oldest known free‑standing stone structures in the world. Built by a prehistoric community using enormous limestone blocks, the temples demonstrate advanced construction techniques and a strong sense of planning long before metal tools were available.
