L-Għajn il-Kbira

This historic photograph shows the interior of L‑Għajn il‑Kbira in Fontana, a large arched stone structure forming a natural spring area enclosed within thick limestone walls. The semi‑circular vault dominates the space, its surface worn and darkened by age and constant moisture, while beneath it a series of stone basins and channels are carved into the floor, designed to collect and guide flowing water. L‑Għajn il‑Kbira, meaning “the large spring,” was one of the most important natural freshwater sources in Gozo, supplying water to nearby communities in an island otherwise lacking rivers or large water reserves. Its construction reflects efforts to manage and protect this vital resource, combining natural spring flow with built stone infrastructure for storage and distribution.
