View of the Citadel

This historic photograph captures a broad and elevated view of the Citadel in Victoria, rising prominently above a dense cluster of traditional limestone houses. In the foreground, terraced fields and low rubble walls stretch across the landscape, dotted with prickly‑pear plants, while the middle ground is filled with tightly packed dwellings forming the edge of the town. The Citadel has long served as the historical and administrative heart of Gozo, occupying a strategic central position that offered both defence and control over the island. Its fortifications were significantly rebuilt by the Order of St John in the 16th and 17th centuries to protect the population from raids, and it remained a place of refuge for centuries.
