Chambray inner gate

Chambray inner gate

This historic photograph shows the inner gate of Fort Chambray, framed by a monumental limestone gateway richly decorated with Baroque architectural detail. The entrance is composed of a rounded arch set within a heavily articulated façade, with large stone blocks arranged in alternating textures and pilaster‑like elements on either side. Above the arch, an elaborate sculpted coat of arms crowns a large inscribed panel, while the words “CHAMBRAI MENTAL HOSPITAL” are clearly visible across the entrance, reflecting a later phase in the fort’s history. Fort Chambray was originally built in the mid‑18th century by the Order of St John as a major fortified settlement overlooking Mġarr Harbour, intended to function as a defensive and administrative centre. Although it never fully fulfilled its military role, the complex was later repurposed, and for a period it served as a mental hospital, as indicated by the inscription visible above the gate.
